Umrah Preparation Checklist: From Planning to Return

By Xen Trips Travel TeamPublished Updated 7 min read

Umrah essentials: white Ihram cloth, prayer beads, a small travel bag and a passport on a light surface

Umrah is a journey many people prepare for over months. A clear Umrah checklist takes care of the practical side, so you can give your attention to worship. This guide walks through the stages in order: planning, documents, the visa route, packing, health, accommodation, travel between the two holy cities, and ziyarat. If you would like a team to arrange the logistics, our Umrah packages cover the visa route, hotels and transport in one plan.

Umrah checklist at a glance

The essentials for Umrah are a valid passport, a visa that permits Umrah issued through an authorised channel, a meningococcal vaccination certificate, a Nusuk account for permits, Ihram clothing for men or loose modest clothing for women, broken-in footwear, unscented toiletries, and confirmed flights, hotels and transport between Makkah and Madinah.

Start with your dates and your group

Decide how long you can stay and who is travelling. The length of your trip shapes everything else: how many nights you spend in Makkah and in Madinah, which flights suit you, and how much time you want for rest between rituals. Travelling with parents, children or someone who finds long walks difficult is a good reason to choose hotels close to the mosque and to leave extra time in the plan.

Check the calendar for school holidays, public holidays and the seasons in Saudi Arabia. Busy periods usually mean higher demand for flights and rooms, so booking earlier gives you more choice. You can compare options on our Saudi Arabia flights page and then match your arrival and departure to your hotel dates.

Umrah documents and the visa route

Your passport is the first item on the Umrah checklist. Confirm its expiry date well before you travel, because many countries require validity beyond your return date, and renewing a passport takes time. Keep clear copies of the photo page, and store a digital copy somewhere you can reach it offline.

  • Passport with enough validity, plus copies of the photo page
  • Passport-style photographs in case a form asks for them
  • Flight and hotel confirmations, printed and saved on your phone
  • Proof of any required vaccinations or health documents
  • Emergency contacts and your travel insurance details

Always apply for the visa through an authorised channel, such as the official Saudi platforms or a licensed travel provider, and check the current official requirements for your passport. Entry rules, validity periods and supporting documents can change, and the final decision rests with the issuing authority. Our visa support team can go through your application with you, although approval is never something we can promise.

Nusuk permits for Umrah and the Rawdah

Umrah permits are booked through Saudi Arabia's official Nusuk platform and app, which is also used to book a separate permit for the Rawdah in Madinah. Download the app from the official app store listing, create your account, and read the instructions it gives for your trip. Since the process can be updated, treat the app as the source of truth for permit rules and time slots, and keep notifications switched on during your stay.

Ihram, Miqat and the steps of Umrah

Ihram is both a state of sanctity and, for men, a set of two simple unstitched white cloths. Women wear modest, loose clothing that covers the body, usually leaving the face and hands uncovered. Pilgrims enter Ihram at or before the Miqat, the designated boundary point for their direction of travel, and many people wear their Ihram clothing for the flight. Ask your scholar, group leader or travel provider exactly where and when to make your intention, since it depends on your route.

Learn the sequence of Umrah before you go. It begins with the intention, followed by Tawaf around the Kaaba and two units of prayer, behind the Station of Ibrahim where space allows. Then comes Sa'i between Safa and Marwa, and finally shaving or trimming the hair. Reading it beforehand, or attending a preparation class at your local mosque, makes the rituals feel familiar when you arrive.

What to pack for Umrah

Clothing and comfort

Pack light, breathable layers, a spare set of Ihram cloths for men, comfortable slip-on shoes and a small day bag with a zip. Bring a modest everyday wardrobe for time outside the rituals. Air conditioning inside the mosques and hotels can be strong, so a light cover-up is useful.

Essentials

  • Unscented soap, shampoo and lotion, because fragrance is avoided during Ihram
  • A refillable water bottle and a small prayer mat
  • A belt pouch or small bag for documents and your phone
  • A power bank and the correct plug adaptor
  • Personal medicines in original packaging, with a note from your doctor if needed

Health and comfort

Check the current official health requirements for pilgrims, which include a meningococcal vaccination given at least 10 days before arrival, and book any appointments early. See your doctor before you travel if you have a long-term condition. Drink water regularly, rest between rituals, and plan quieter hours for the busiest tasks. Choose travel insurance that covers medical care abroad.

Choosing hotels in Makkah and Madinah

Distance to the mosque is the main trade-off. A closer hotel saves walking time and energy, which matters most for older travellers, while a slightly longer walk can offer more room choice. Look at what the property says about shuttle services, prayer-time access, breakfast arrangements and lift capacity. Browse our hotels and compare locations before you decide how many nights to give each city.

Travelling between Makkah and Madinah

The two cities are connected by road and by the Haramain high-speed railway, which also serves Jeddah. Many pilgrims choose the train for comfort and predictability, while others prefer a private or group coach that collects them at the hotel door. Whichever you pick, reserve in advance and keep your luggage small enough to handle on your own. Train stations sit outside the central areas, so plan a taxi or shuttle between the station and your hotel.

Ziyarat etiquette

Ziyarat means visiting sites of Islamic history. In Madinah, many visitors see Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, Quba Mosque, Mount Uhud and the Masjid al-Qiblatayn. In Makkah, some visit the areas connected with Hajj, such as Arafat and Mina. Dress modestly, keep your voice low, follow signs and staff guidance, and avoid blocking walkways when you take photographs. Respect the quiet of every place, and remember that people are there to pray.

Phone, money and staying together

Set up mobile data before you rely on the Nusuk app and maps. Many visitors buy a local SIM or an eSIM on arrival, and cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger shops. Agree a meeting point with your group at a numbered gate of the mosque, since crowds make it easy to lose sight of each other.

Before you fly home

  1. Confirm your return flight time and the airport transfer the day before.
  2. Repack carefully and check baggage limits on your ticket.
  3. Settle your hotel bill and keep receipts.
  4. Keep your passport and boarding documents in your hand luggage.
